Journeyman
Lineman State
Fitness Card Requirements
IBEW, Local
1547 requires a journeyman lineman to show a paid up dues receipt and in
order to work construction your ticket must be an “A” member dues
receipt. Employers may
require more than IBEW.
In order to
work in the State of Alaska
the State requires testing for a state certificate of fitness card for
journeyman linemen.
The requirements to obtain a
certificate of fitness are as follows:
1.
Call the Department of Labor (D.O.L.) at 907-269-4963 and request an
application for journeyman lineman.
For your convenience, you may also access the web for the
application for journeyman lineman.
The web address is;
http://www.labor.state.ak.us./lss/lssforms.htm.
Select Certificate of Fitness, Electrical.
The Certificate of Fitness needs to be printed, completed and
follow the steps below.
2.
Fill out the application and have it
notarized when you
sign the bottom of the application.
The Alaska Department of Labor (D.O.L.)
must have the original.
3.
Your home local must supply Local 1547 with a letter of introduction
with the date you passed your journeyman exam or you may send a
certificate from an approved B.A.T. apprenticeship program you
completed.
4.
Alaska D.O.L. requires proof of
8000 hours in order to test, so a 7000 hour apprenticeship will not
suffice on its own. At least
another 1000 hours of documented on the job training must be provided.
5.
Do not fill out the
experience verification sheet?
This sheet is to be filled out by a lineman representative at
IBEW Local 1547.
6.
Mail completed application, $50.00 check made out to the State of Alaska D.O.L., Letter of Introduction from
your home local and proof of passing a journeyman lineman’s exam to IBEW
Local 1547. We will then
ascertain and evaluate hours to sign the work experience sheet.
Once you meet qualification, your application and check will be
hand delivered to the D.O.L.
Mailing Address:
Tom Nealeigh, Lineman Representative
IBEW Local 1547
3333 Denali Street, Suite 200
Anchorage,

7.
Tests at the Alaska D.O.L. are only given once a week and only on
Wednesday. When the
Department of Labor calls, you will need to give them a date when you
will be available to test.
The $50.00 check made out to the State of Alaska D.O.L. is the test
application fee only. After
passing the test the license costs an additional $200.00 fee for a two
(2) year license.

Martin Luther King Jr. Talks about the Labor
Movement
"The
labor movement was the principal force that transformed misery and despair
into hope and progress. Out of its bold struggles, economic and social
reform gave birth to unemployment insurance, old-age pensions, government
relief for the destitute and, above all, new wage levels that meant not mere
survival but a tolerable life. The captains of industry did not lead this
transformation; they resisted it until they were overcome. When in the
thirties the wave of union organization crested over the nation, it carried
to secure shores not only itself but the whole society."
—Speech to the state convention of the Illinois
AFL-CIO, Oct. 7, 1965
