BILL EGAN SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA
Awards
A total of sixteen scholarships, each in the amount of $1,000.00, (six from Unit 101, four from Unit 102 and three from Units 103 and 104) are awarded every year for accredited schools and universities, preferably in the State of Alaska. If training is not available in Alaska, outside schools are acceptable. One of the recipients from each Unit shall be a graduating high school student, if available.
Eligibility
Members of IBEW Local 1547 with at least the four (4) past years of good standing and their legal dependents are considered eligible. Members on honorary withdrawal are not considered eligible. Applicants must be accepted into an accredited college or a recognized technical or trade school by the time the award is issued. If the applicant is applying for continuation of a college program, the GPA must be above a 3.0 average.
Awards Based Upon
Completed application form including high school, college or trade school transcripts. Applicants who have taken the SAT or ACT must submit their exam scores. Military record (if applicable), work history, letters of recommendation, and interview by committee are also considered.
Applicants are required to provide one personal reference, verification of union membership or family member relationship, and an essay of 500 words on his or her personal interests and aspirations, including what the IBEW means to you and how this union has impacted your life.
Selection shall be based upon the following items, but shall not be limited to the following: Academic Achievement/GPA; Essay; School Activities; Honors, Awards, Accomplishments; Community Activities; Letters of Recommendation.
Award Committee and Process
1. Applications are available from each Unit after Janaury 15th of each year and are accessible (below) as PDF files for downloads.
2. Applicants are to submit an application and all requested information to the Unit Committee in the area that the applicant resides closest to or within and must be received no later than close of business March 31st of each year; the only exception being the “final” transcript for high school graduating seniors.
3. Each Unit Committee shall review their applicants for qualifications and interview the applicants, at their discretion, prior to the May executive board meeting.
4. The Unit Committee will then rank, in order of preference, all qualified applicants and forward to the Executive Board for their consideration at their May meeting.
5. The Executive Board, at their May meeting, will select the sixteen recipients to which the scholarships will be awarded.
6. Scholarship recipients will be notified mid-May of each year.
7. Scholarship checks are made payable to both the scholarship recipient and the college of choice. If the recipient for any reason does not attend college, it is expected that the scholarship funds will be returned to IBEW Local 1547.
